“Imagine a community where all children are happy and healthy.”

The beginning of the New Year provides the perfect opportunity to dream big dreams like this — when virtually anything is possible. A recent series of meetings convened by “BRICK,” a group of Louisville leaders committed to Building Resilience In our Community’s Kids, invited participants to imagine how to make this wish come true for Louisville by exploring new ways of approaching historically vexing problems. The result is the emergence of new collaborations and tantalizing possibilities that are carrying us into 2017.

Around the country there is growing awareness that extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong impact on health and behavior  Nearly 20 years of research finds that the more adverse events experienced in childhood the greater the odds of poor health in adulthood — from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression.
