Dominican University of California has long offered coursework in social justice, but now it has a full major in it.

The administration said the new major program, which starts in the fall semester, comes as more students are becoming energized about civic engagement — and seeking careers along those lines.

“This generation of students are really very concerned about the world — from issues of climate change to human rights,” said Julia van der Ryn, executive director of Dominican’s Center for University Partnerships and Community Engagement. “So having an opportunity through their education to gain awareness and gain the knowledge and skills that they can take out into to whatever career that they have is really meaningful and important.”

The social justice major program will incorporate Dominican’s existing , as well as embedding a menu of service-oriented courses that marry academic studies with work in the community.
