Good morning, happy Monday, and welcome back! I hope everyone is fully recovered from over-indulging in holiday feasting and is rested and ready to jump back in. This morning, I want to turn your attention to the special issue of Child Maltreatment that was just released, on Understanding Neurobiological Implications of Maltreatment: From Preschool to Emerging Adulthood.[1]
 
Before I say anything else, let me issue this disclaimer—I know the articles are technical, chock full of scientific terminology, and for the most part directed at an audience with far more specific knowledge than most of us reading this have. Nevertheless, the entire issue is well worth your time. Not so long ago, we began to understand the connections between child abuse and psychological and behavioral outcomes. Now, as the authors of the “Introduction to the Special Issue” note, we are beginning to “unravel the neurobiological process that underlies the effect of adverse rearing environments on human development across the life span.” Id., p. 335. And the wondrous thing about the special issue is that it “includes articles with empirical evidence on a range of biological mechanisms linking child maltreatment to various outcomes, spanning from preschool to emerging adulthood.” Introduction, p. 335...
