Mission
The Mid-Valley Suicide Prevention Coalition’s mission is to raise awareness about suicide prevention through targeted outreach and education. Outreach efforts focus on making suicide prevention an approachable topic for all ages through social media and community based interaction. The coalition provides education through evidence based trainings that are nationally recognized as best practices.
History
The Mid-Valley Suicide Prevention Coalition was started in the Spring of 2015. Multiple community partners, agencies, and Polk County residents met to discuss the issue of suicide and to gather ideas of what needs to be done to prevent suicide. From that initial meeting, a plan was created to address suicide prevention in a more collaborative and coordinated way. The coalition is now supported by five sub-committees who meet on a regular basis to focus on specific areas such as children and families, special populations, health and wellness, marketing, and training.
Funding
The Salem Health Community Partnership Grant awarded Polk County Family and Community Outreach (FCO) $50,000 to help with suicide prevention efforts of the coalition. In addition, the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund gave $7,500 to those same efforts. As a result of the generosity of Salem Health and The Siletz Tribe, The Mid-Valley Suicide Prevention Coalition is able to provide regular evidence based training opportunities in communities to help others know how to intervene with those at risk of suicide. FCO staff provide leadership for the Coalition.
Coalition Meetings
The Mid-Valley Suicide Prevention Coalition meets quarterly with more frequent sub-committee meetings. These meetings are open to the public and anyone with an interest in Suicide Prevention is welcome to join us. For information about when these meetings are happening, check our calendar.
