  • Suzy discussed her work as a campus coach
    • Margaret shared how the GT Pie Company has an endowment for the MSU FAME program
    • NMC developed the first campus coach program in Michigan
    • Financial Aid office used to be a barrier, but training of the staff has made all of the difference according to Suzy
    • Question: How do students find Suzy?
      • She works with foster care kids currently in the system
      • Private agency foster care workers and DHHS workers
      • School counselors refer students to her
      • She provides training about her work for CASA volunteers
      • She provides training about her work for newly adopted parents
      • She goes to a lot of IEP’s
    • Nicole discussed the Surrogate Parent program
    • TBA has a nurse practitioner and all students are asked to complete a risk assessment online
      • It is confidential
      • Students participate at good numbers because it is given on a computer
    • Discussed the state task force on trauma- led by Mary Meuller
    • Discussed MOOC, college courses online, free, but no credit

Correction: Northwestern Michigan College was the first community college in Michigan to offer the campus coach program. Western Michigan University was the first institution of higher education to bring the program to Michigan.
