"Addiction: Medical Condition or Moral Breakdown?"

Here is a great conversation that is happening through Philadelphia's renowned science center - The Franklin Institute (FI). It has focused in on the brain, with the addition of an entire exhibit on "The Brain."  FI shares the following: It has offered a series of presentations "Let's Talk About Your Brain:  Conversations about Neuroscience and Society." The series of six conversations reflect neuroscience and society and have explored topics as widespread as adolescent brain development, the influence of stress and emotions on decision-making, Alzheimer's disease, and the various ways in which addiction affects the brain.

Tonight's final panel presentation is "Addiction - Medical Condition of Moral Breakdown" from 7 - 8:30 pm.

"The human brain is an extraordinarily complex and fine-tuned communications network that governs our thoughts, emotions, and actions. When drugs enter the brain, they can interrupt this network and change how the brain performs. But, what prompts first-time use? Are some individuals more likely to become addicts than others? Join experts in the field of addiction research from Temple University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Treatment Research Institute to learn about the biological mechanisms of addiction and discuss our changing societal response."

SPEAKERS:
Anna Rose Childress, Ph.D., Director of the Brain-Behavioral Vulnerabilities Laboratory, Center for Studies of Addiction, University of Pennsylvania; A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., Chairman of the Board, Treatment Research Institute; Sara Jane Ward, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Temple University

Let's Talk About Your Brain: Conversations about Neuroscience and Society events are supported in part by the Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation.
