This is a collection of resources regarding structural racism and trauma. This list aims to give a broad overview and is not all-inclusive. We welcome suggestions; if you have any, please comment below!

BSC Full Report Trauma Resilient Informed City Baltimore, 2016: This is the full report of the work, data, lessons, and direct quotes from several teams of people from various backgrounds in the Baltimore community as they worked to understand, collaborate, and take action regarding trauma, resilience, trauma-informed, race and racism.

BSC (Breakthrough Series Collaborative) Short Version of Racially Aware Trauma Informed Care, 2016: This resource is a brief document about bias, inequities, identity, leadership, accessibility, and more in the context of race.

CSSP (Center for the Study of Social Policy) Staff Core Competencies to Achieve Racial Equity, 2014: This resource contains detailed competencies for achieving racial equity among CSSP staff.

Effectively Talk About Race - Dr. Ken Hardy, 2015: This is an infographic about shifting views of self and addressing the dynamics between white people and people of color to prepare for a conversation on race.

Glossary for Understanding the Dismantling Structural Racism/Promoting Racial Equity Analysis, 2016: This glossary by The Aspen Institute contains terms and detailed descriptions in order of importance.

National Perinatal Task Force - Building a Movement to Birth a More Just and Loving World, 2018: This report identifies and details maternal and infant health outcomes and racial disparities in the US, areas of need to understand how inequitable conditions affect health, the task force founded to respond to those needs, and recommendations for healthcare practitioners and agencies.

Trauma Transformed Healing Organization Chart, 2018: This flowchart shows trauma inducing concepts becoming trauma reducing.

RYSE Interacting Layers of Trauma and Healing, 2017: This diagram shows trauma and healing on all levels from individual to structural.

Perceptions of Racism in Children and Youth (PRaCY): properties of a self-report instrument for research on children's health and development, 2010: This research article describes the development and testing of an instrument that measures perceptions of racism, emotional response, and coping response in children.

ProInspire Equity in Center Infographic, 2018: This resource is about creating a race equity culture in social sector organizations.

Race Equity Crosswalk Tool, 2017: This document has a step by step guide and question series to help leaders ensure their action plans are addressing racial equity.

Racism and Child Health: A Review of the Literature and Future Directions, 2009: This literature review considers racism as a stressor that negatively affects health and development, in similar ways poverty, violence, abuse, etc. do. The review is a systematic search of articles associating racism with negative health and development issues.

RYSE Slides, 2017: This diagram shows that addressing ACEs requires addressing race and historical trauma, and that the negative consequences are intertwined.

Great resource! So appreciative for this work! 

I'm wondering if I can do this here but, I am currently looking for data that may support a reasonable accommodation for my son who is African American with PTSD and Attachment issues. Lots of trauma. The reasonable accommodation I am specifically seeking is against the dress code in his school district. He currently has little tools to help him deal with his emotions and sometimes needs to wear his hood from his hoodie to "turtle" when he is feeling overwhelmed. He is a very smart kid and does well in school and this is sometimes the only thing that helps him to stay engaged. And the district is very adamant that only "thugs" wear hoods during school. The people who have to enforce this code are also struggling with their feelings that it is a "dumb rule". He is in an alternative school now because of how uncomfortable public school administrators treated him. This rule is new to this alternative school this year. Otherwise, I would have chose another school.

I plan on fighting this because I feel like the hood is similar to having a security blanket for youth of color in this current racial climate. I couldn't imagine being a black boy with traumatic emotions walking around in a state that hasn't addressed it's white supremacy head on.

Thanks so much for this important material which I will appreciate getting into. 

Here in Philadelphia our City Council will be holding public hearings to learn about the secondary trauma of staff who work with traumatized clients—and to explore the importance of staff resiliency programs. We hope to develop legislation to support such programming and thereby nurture trauma informed care (TIC) in our city.
