SDTIGT Meeting Minutes - January 8, 2016

We had another well-attended meeting with a wonderful Trauma-Informed Journey presentation from SAY San Diego and some great discussions!

The minutes are posted below and attached:

  1. Introductions (20 attendees)
  1. Agency Overview and Trauma Informed Journey Presentation: SAY San Diego

Jessica Rathbun, MSW Program Manager at SAY San Diego, gave a wonderful presentation on her agency’s trauma informed journey (and brought us homemade cupcakes - YUM!!)

SAY San Diego has many programs divided into three units: 1) Youth, Adult and Family Wellness with a program focus on providing direct services to individuals, families and groups, 2) Community Engagement, and 3) Child and Youth Development focusing on early learning and development.

Since beginning their trauma-informed journey in March 2012 with a Senior Manager/Board training by Dawn Griffin, SAY has had MANY accomplishments, including:

  • Training all staff on TIC, with trainings specifically tailored to case managers, therapists and administrative staff
  • TF-CBT training for therapists
  • Incorporating TIC into new hire training
  • Use of trauma screening tools
  • Self-care trainings for staff
  • Renovating the lobby and client areas in all locations to be more comfortable, relaxing and trauma sensitive
  • Utilization of alternative and expressive therapies (ex. art therapy and expressive writing)
  • “Hiring” Sejera, a Facility Dog, at their O’Farrel Resource Center
  • Completing staff and client surveys
  • They are now focusing on renovating their conference rooms and staff areas

SAY has a Trauma Advisory Committee (formed 6/2012) which meets monthly. Future goals focus on regular re-surveying of parents re: service effectiveness, sustaining on-going TIC training, and creating monthly internal TIC emails.

  • Mobilizing Action for Resilient Communities (MARC) grant update – Rosa Ana/Heidi

Heidi explained about the MARC grant and the national learning collaborative focus on resilience and preventing/reducing ACEs. Harmonium will function as the “backbone” of our efforts, providing infrastructure and support. The 1st step is a survey to obtain a baseline of TIC services, awareness and collaboration in San Diego County and among providers. This will be completed by independent evaluators (Westat), as well as via a survey of active SDTIGT members.

The MARC 1-pager posted 2/16/16 by Heidi on ACEs Connection, explaining the MARC project in more depth.

  1. Announcements/Achievements
    1. 2009 Strategic Plan goals report – Amelia
      1. Amelia will post this report on our ACEs page
    2. Strategic Plan Update alignment with MARC – Rosa Ana
      1. MARC goals were written to align with the Guide Team’s broad strategic goals. The core leadership group will continue to meet on even months to revise and further define goals and objectives.
    3. SDTIGT mailing list is NO MORE!/ Welcome for new members – Amelia/Pam
      1. We will work with Heidi to develop Welcome Email to be sent to new GT attendees. Discussed how to help new attendees understand structure of GT prior to attending meeting. This is difficult as we do not require RSVPs – which would be contrary to our grassroots foundation.
    4. ACEs Connection: Assets Map, member blog posts, uploading historic SDTIGT documents – Dana
      1. Dana and Jennifer talked about their roles with ACEs Connection and MARC, respectively, and how support GT members in utilizing ACEs Connection more effectively. We will have one “ACEs Tutorial Topic” each month.
  1. Trainings – All
    1. Plan to review our Core Components in the future to assure relevance and alignment with County components.
  1. Future TI Journey Presentations
    1. March 4 – North County Lifeline, Jim Goethel/Shelly Harris
    2. May 6 – San Diego Center for Children, Pam Hansen

  • Next meeting March 4, 2016 ~ 12:30 pm-2:00 pm at San Diego Center for Children - we meet in “odd” months only.
