From Hopelessness ~ To Hope and Healing (Community Alliance for Healthy Minds)

The Community Alliance for Healthy Minds (CAHM) is dedicated to helping individuals and families lead happier, healthier lives through improved mental wellness.

The 2018 CAHM Forum, co-hosted by the California State University Institute for Palliative Care at California State University San Marcos, is designed to provide education, support, resources, skill- building and stigma-reduction to the community.  We strive to integrate the mind, body and spirit to achieve balance and improve quality of life, especially for those who have mental illness, substance abuse issues, and chronic illnesses. We aspire to assist families and caregivers, in addition to those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

This all-day event is to learn more about mental wellness, recovery and palliative care in a shame-free atmosphere.  The morning begins with an opening address by Nicholas “dr. Nick” Yphantides, Chief Medical Officer, San Diego County, followed by the award winning film, Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope. This follows the birth of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study and how it has energized a movement across the U.S. Resilience explains the emerging science of toxic stress and the impact it has on the health of our citizens. The CDC has determined that the ACEs define “the nation's worst health crisis, and its least known".  A panel of experts will discuss how the ACEs prove to be a strong predictor even into adulthood, of difficulties with learning, social functioning, and health and well- being. It describes the affects ACEs has on the mental, physical, and emotional health of both children and adults.

The afternoon will convene with workshops hosted by the panel of experts. We are thrilled to conclude the Forum with a very special monologue by Andrew Norelli, an internationally recognized comedian whose understated delivery and strong material simmers with fierce wit and biting intelligence.

There will be 40+ local community resources and numerous opportunities for people to connect, respect, and enjoy one another through a variety of lived experience.  It is a day of optimism where we share our collective wisdom to uncover the possibilities for hope and healing.

So whether you are an individual seeking resources for yourself, a family member, or someone that you know, our goal is to help reduce the stigma and eliminate the shame. We hope to point you in the right direction, connect you with actual service providers who can help, and give you some tools that you can use right now to better manage whatever comes your way.
