Public Health Policy Nerds, Unite!

Public Health Policy might seem kind of boring to most people, but I love it!  Yesterday was especially exciting!  I was at the California Endowment in Sacramento with an incredible group of public health nerds who did their best to identify system and programmatic strategies to ensure that one day, all California children will have Safe, Stable, Nurturing Relationships and Environments.

The Essentials for Childhood Initiative: Safe, Stable, Nurturing Relationships and Environments is an effort led by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in collaboration with the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  They are addressing child maltreatment as a public health issue and their mission is to develop a common agenda and stakeholders to align activities, programs, policies and funding so that all California children, youth and their families have safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments.

I love how these passionate public health nerds are finding ways to support local efforts to build the ACES movement!  Yesterday I was thrilled to learn that the California Superintendent of Public Instruction is on board with these changes and is now an active partner in moving the education system towards incorporating Trauma Informed Care and Services into their culture!

I think someday we will reflect on the work that is happening at this time and recognize how transformative it was for all children, youth and families.  Together we will positively impact the lives of all children in California and beyond!
