The evidence continues to mount demonstrating a strong correlation between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and increased risk of substance use disorder and other co-occurring mental health issues in adulthood. Join Hazelden Betty Ford addiction psychiatrist Stephen Delisi, MD, to take a closer look at specific adverse childhood experiences implicated in chronic illness. Dr. Delisi will review the seminal findings from the CDC-Kaiser ACE Study, discuss the influence of ACEs on neurodevelopment and increased risk for addiction and other co-occurring psychiatric illnesses, and provide data related data on ACEs and the increased risk of reocurrence in opioid use disorder and how trauma-informed care may reduce that risk.

 Objectives:

  • Recognize the ACEs implicated in development of chronic illness
  • Identify the CDC-Kaiser ACE Study results
  • Describe the neurodevelopmental implications of ACEs
  • Understand the ACES-associated risk of reoccurrence in opioid use disorder and how trauma-informed care may reduce that risk
