Sonoma County PACEs Connection (CA)

Notes and materials from 11/19 meeting

Here is another set of great notes drafted by Karen Clemmer.

Dear Sonoma County ACES Connection members!

For all who made came to the meeting –  thank you for trudging through the rain to participate in our Nov 19th meeting!   We had a robust discussion!  The notes below capture the highlights of what was shared – even beyond what was outlined on the agenda!

We were very fortunate to welcome several new members representing a PEDS health center, a TEEN health center and a SCHOOL District to our group!  Their perspectives added richness to our conversations.  As you may see from the attached agenda – we reported out on statewide efforts to move trauma informed care and an ACES framework into policy and practice at the state and national level.   Sonoma County was well represented at the first ever California ACES Summit held earlier this month in San Francisco.  Alison shared Child Parent Institute’s efforts to bring the Sanctuary Model to Sonoma County.  Erin and Arlene from SR Health Centers shared their incredible work screening for ACES!  Karen shared how the Public Health Nursing programs have built ACES into their logic model

Our next meeting will be Wed January 28th from 12:30 to 2:00 at Public Health (625 Fifth Street SR 95404).  A meeting invite for 2015 went out through Outlook – hopefully it will make scheduling and remembering a bit easier!  Between now and then, we are asking members to jot down any agencies that use a trauma informed approach – using the attached TIC Asset Mapping Tool and send your ideas to Alison alisonl@calparents.org so she will work to put all the ideas into a useable format!  (Scroll to the bottom  of this post to the link to the Asset Mapping document.)

 Factors

The Center for Youth Wellness  http://www.centerforyouthwellness.org/  hosted the first CA Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) summit, Children Can Thrive:  http://www.aces-ca.org/overview-of-ca-aces-summit/  The goal of the summit was “to develop a common agenda to address ACEs s the most important public health crisis of our time”.

The report, Hidden Crisis, (N=27,745) debuted at the California ACES Summit!  It has been uploaded as a clip on our group's home page.  Please take a moment to learn more about how ACES impact all Californians and specifically those living in Sonoma County.  According to this new report, one in two Californians has had an adverse experience in childhood.  However, Sonoma County has the 10th highest  prevalence rate, between 62%-65% of Sonoma County residents have at least one ACE.  In Sonoma County, 22% of respondents self reported an ACE score of 4 or more – which is well above the state average.

Watch Nadine Burke Harris   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMaBi-SVPjo  present ACES in a compelling new context!

Take a peek at the Paper Tigers movie trailerhttp://papertigersmovie.com  Robert Redford’s son directed this movie which looks at how one school adapted to better meet the need of students who have experienced significant trauma.  Jane Stevens provided technical support!  Now we are brainstorming ideas for local viewings to help increase community awareness on ACES and trauma informed care.

Sonoma County is supporting efforts to inform policy change at the state and national level through the Essentials of Childhood Initiative.  Learn more at:  http://www.cdc.gov/violencepre...ssentials/index.html

CPI is considering the Sanctuary Model  http://www.sanctuaryweb.com/   & http://www.thesanctuaryinstitu.../the-sanctuary-model  The Sanctuary Model represents a theory-based, trauma-informed, evidence-supported, whole culture approach that has a clear and structured methodology for creating or changing an organizational culture.

 Restoring
COTS utilizes Somatic Healing - Dr. Levine's approach stresses the importance of body awareness in the successful treatment of trauma.  Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma.
