Sonoma County PACEs Connection (CA)

November 18, 2015 Meeting Notes

Fifteen members attended. Attendance was anticipated to be lower, because many members had prior commitments. Allen Nishikawa opened the meeting and introduced Elisabeth Chicoine, Manager of the Public Health Family Health Section.

She announced that yesterday the Board of Supervisors had accepted the funding grant for Mobilizing Action for Resilient Communities (MARC). She thanked everyone for their work in building Sonoma County ACES Connection (SCAC) and for assisting with the grant application. She noted that two Supervisors spoke about the importance of understanding and responding to ACES, and that SCAC member Kate Jenkins also spoke about the need for greater community understanding and involvement. (You can watch Supervisor Carillo’s comments on the MARC grant by going to the following link Mobilizing Action for Resilient Communities (MARC) Grant –  Authorize the Director to execute a grant agreement with the Health Federation of Philadelphia to accept $100,000 in revenue to support efforts to prevent childhood trauma and mobilize action aimed at promoting resilience and preventing and reducing Adverse Childhood Experiences for the period October 19, 2015 through October 18, 2017.

MARC Grant Update

On November 9 &10, Karen Clemmer and Ulla Mast from the Family Health Section attended a meeting in Philadelphia for the funded MARC grantees. Neither were able to attend today’s meeting, so Allen provided a quick overview of highlights and next steps.

  • 14 groups around the country were funded to improve community collaboration, engagement and knowledge regarding ACES, as well as to promote trauma-informed practices.
  • Funders were looking to test different models, sizes and methods - wide variety in terms of population size (7,000,000 to 23,000), year established (1990 to 2014) and approach
  • We received a two year start up grant and need to formalize SCAC with a charter, procedures, outreach plan, etc.
  • Grant includes developing and training 25 local subject matter experts/advocates using Dr. Anda’s ACES Interface Train the Master Trainer Program. This is a great opportunity to identify interested person(s) in your specialization/community and build their ACES expertise, so that they can speak to your staff/clients/neighborhoods.
  • We will have access to a group of nationally recognized experts, with the possibility of bringing them here for on-site consultations or as keynote speakers.
  • Goal at the end of the grant will be to strengthen our local collaborations (Health Action, First 5, Upstream Investments, etc.)

Next Steps

  • We need to develop committees to take on tasks such as preparing a charter, policies and procedures, and an outreach and communications plan.
  • We need to create a steering committee to provide long-term direction and manage business, such as implementing and overseeing the MARC grant.
  • At a future meeting, will have Karen share her thoughts about and information from both the MARC Grantees Meeting and the California Policy Convening on Childhood Adversity Conference in San Diego.

Decisions

After discussion, the group agreed to the following actions.

  1. Adopt the proposed committee structure: if additional committees are needed, we can add/modify later. Agreed generally to the committees and tasks, with the understanding that when committees meet, they may recommend modifications or changes.
  2. Considered cancelling the December meeting, but decided to meet in order to not lose momentum.
  3. Asked members to identify a committee (or committees) of interest. Here is the sign up list as of Nov. 17, 2015
