Sonoma County ACES Connection Meeting Minutes 5-25-16

(Please see the attachment for a nicely formatted version of these minutes.)

5/25/16

Dear Sonoma County ACEs Connection Friends,

Thank you to all that participated in today’s ACES meeting.

Today, we started the meeting with a meditation for our mindful moment with Kate Jenkins.   With just a few breaths and a focus on our intentions, we found improved focus for our meeting.

Grace Harris led a discussion around the concept of “Trauma-Informed Care.”  Folks turned to their neighbor and shared their definition for the term.  Brad  Michnevich and Michael Johnson of Committee on the Shelterless (COTS) then both provided extensive overviews of the Trauma-Informed efforts used by Juvenile Probation and COTs.

Brad provided details about the PACT assessment (which asks some questions similar to the ACE Study questionnaire), Motivational Interviewing, EPIC Supervision (which includes developing and practicing coping skills), and other evidence-based approaches for addressing underlying trauma.  He also shared that all of the Probation Officers participated in an ACE Study training last year.  Many probation efforts are now aimed at keeping kids out of the system by providing trauma-informed services, as youth offenders often become adult offenders.

Michael shared resource materials used as foundational tools in training his staff and providing services to homeless clients, including a PowerPoint and a journal article entitled “Mobilizing Resilience and Recovery in Response to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE):  A Restorative Integral Support (RIS) Case Study.”

Strategic Planning Session June 29, 9-12!  Please RSVP if you’d like to join in the retreat – we are hoping for about 20 folks to join us.  We’ll all come together at Elsie Allen High on June 29 from 12:30 – 2:00 for our regular meeting.

Please post news of your activities on the ACEs Connection webpage.          As Jane says, this is our community of practice.  It is as easy to use as Facebook, but it offers us so much more as it can be a place where we share resources and ideas.  The site is newly organized and has a new look.
