Sonoma County ACES Connection Meeting Notes 9/23

Grounding activity - 

Introductions - Invited each of 15 in attendance to introduce themselves and share what brings them to this gathering.

Alison Lobb- Mind Body Skills group cohort - these groups count toward parole officer education hours. Now have a waiting list of 3-4 people! Project coordination for mental health collaboration project - during pretrial period - support transition into community and treatment - includes some transitional housing Also volunteered with Alternatives to Violence and was volunteering at Folsom Prison up until Covid.

Celosia Arcadia-Chair of Cradle to Career  Gravenstein Health Action meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month - please reach out if you’d like to participate. Recently became a 501c3 - see the Sonoma West article feeling excited about the success around the tobacco ordinance in Sebastopol - includes vaping. She teaches yoga and stress reduction at SSU - also a mind body medicine facilitator 

Yensi Jacobo - Mentor Me program / diversion program / high school extension program - with restorative practices - youth through age 24 - out of school youth 

Julie Garen - Wraparound coordinator for the Santa Rosa Violence Prevention program community engagement for the city of Santa Rosa - used to attend SCAC meetings at CPI, was out on maternity leave, happy to be back supporting this work. The Measure 0 ¼ cent sales tax supports much of their efforts - recreation and parks - her office pushes out funds to CPI, SAY, etc. They also provide case management and services - accepts referrals - her work aligns with ACEs and she would like more training to make their department and programs align with ACEs science.

Elizabeth Vermilyea - Deputy Director CPI - support families on all levels to strengthen and prebent child abuse -  enjoyment trainings justice programs in Sonoma County - good to see all

Linda Irving - School Superintent of Sebastopol Union School District we have about 420 kids in grades K-8, plus a preschool and a day care! Looking forward to being involved in these ACEs efforts.

Sarah Pilgrim - Social Worker for Family Youth & Children's services - with an emphasis on community mental health and transitional age youth (TAY?) being able to now see clients outside in safe places and in safe ways has been tremendously helpful. Previously we found that video and phone contacts was not as effective so I am happy to be able to see folks in person.

Kathryn Clark Silvera - Care 4 Em - cultivate Solano Co - mindful movement and mindful music - preschool First 5 Solano County funds, partner with library - with 4Cs in Sonoma Co and Marin Co - just knowing about the ACEs study and how they impacted my life and sharing this information with parents is so empowering to families. We can be kinder to ourselves - take a pause between listening and responding - coaching and mentoring. 

Rocio Rodriguez- Sonoma County COAD Director. Sonoma County COAD is a collaboration of community agencies that fosters effective service delivery to those affected by disasters in Sonoma County throughout the disaster cycle – mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Elizabeth Smith and Bryan Clement  are working on developing a Sonoma county snapshot synthesizing data from across the county - from Los Cien, First 5 Sonoma County - etc - one source of information of what we understand how the last 7 months have impacted Sonoma County Children, Families, and Communities.

Presentation opportunities - lots to learn - can we share what we are doing - as our organization evolves and changes - ASK does anyone want to volunteer to do a presentation for our group? To help us all better understand what folks are up to. 

United Nations International Day of Peace celebration - Peace Town collaborated with Shoes 4 Kidz and Castle school - “Chalk it up for Peace”, encouraged the community to chalk up the sidewalks with peace. Castel participated as well. Team also provided brief meditation and then gave each (25) kids a pair of new shoes. Supported the Protective Factors! 

Peacetown Family Village offered Peace Bags and partnered with CPI, First 5 SC, Dovetail, and many other local organizations. This was a great display of providing the Protective Factors during COVID. https://www.peacetown.org/peacetown-village

Positive shout out to Walter Linares, a Hanna Alumni who is running for Rohnert Park City Council. You can have high ACEs and still lead an amazing life! 

Melody Magguie - Center Point  Drug Addiction Treatment Center (DAAC) - perinatal program

 

Amanda - Sonoma County Human Services Employment and Training Coordinator through Sonoma Human Services - trauma informed agency champion for human services Dept! M/C eligible or cash aid - they can authorize transportation, reimbursement, etc - to support women Sonoma Works - We are trying to gather a snapshot of SC on what resources are available - data - human experiences - how all of us are impacted - has there been an uptick in women coming into services - Melody - yes we are full now! We do not turn folks away - boredom is a big factor - without a structured schedule there is more time to - a lot of people have lost their jobs - creates boredom - a very structured schedule is better - accountability is a big motivator - we are not doing testing as much b/c Covid - stress from job loss and children out of school - cannot find childcare - this all contributes to relapse. Life skills, parenting skills, nursery to bring babies, newborns and nursing babies, healthy snacks, speakers, holiday projects, positive environment ment - and education and support - full circle - it takes about a year to get through the program. Take Medi-Cal for clients that are pregnant and up to 6 week pp and transportation. Our program  helps pay for DAAC too -

Discussion around the impact of the last 6 months significantly affecting families, while other families are settling into it and finding homeschool is a better option. For those families that Distance Learning is not working for, how can those families be supported? Would like to have more discussion on this topic in future meetings.

West Sonoma County Soroptimist offering a $1000 scholarship - Do you know a woman head of household, going to school, with dependants, and can use financial assistance? Our club is taking applications to give a $1,000 award.

They can submit their application between August 1 - November 15. Ultimately, a Live Your Dream Awards finalist has the potential to receive up to $16,000 to help offset tuition costs, purchase books, get transportation, or find reliable childcare so she can worry less about how to pay her bills and focus on reaching her dreams.
