Sonoma County ACEs Connection Strategic Planning Session Update

Thanks to all of the members who contributed to our Strategic Planning Session on 6/29/16.  The engaging agenda is attached to this post, as is the presentation on the scope of the problem of ACE's in Sonoma County.

Our fabulous facilitator, Selena Polston (Innovation Team Program Manager for Public Health) captures some of our meeting highlights in these notes:

ACES Connection Retreat: Developing a Vision Statement

Wednesday, June 29, 2016

Elsie Allen High School

What Makes A Great Vision Statement?

  • Describes desired end state/outcomes
  • Is inspirational, focuses on the “big picture”
  • Uses descriptive and powerful language
  • Is clear, memorable and concise (avoids all jargon)
  • Shoots high while also being realistic

Proposed ACES Connection Vision Statements (From Sub-Groups)

The Vision of the ACES Coalition is……..

  • “Healthy, Resilient, People and Communities”
  • “Our Vision is To Create A Resilient Community”
  • “An Informed Community, United to Build Resilience and Prevent Or Heal Childhood Adversity”
  • “Sonoma County is a Resilient Community that Supports and Provides Tools and Resources to Ensure All People Live Healthy and Safe Lives”

Group Agreement Regarding Vision Statement Components:

  • Focus is on “Our Community” rather than Sonoma County
  • Both the community and the individuals who make up that community are “healthy”, “resilient” and “safe”
  • There is a universal understanding and awareness of ACES
  • The community is “united” in preventing and healing ACES

Next Steps:

The following volunteers will use the proposed vision statements and agreed-upon vision components to develop 2-3 updated Vision Statements:

  • Briana
  • Alea
  • Ally
  • Sue

These statements will be circulated to AC members who will come to consensus on the final working Vision Statement.

Other Agreements:

5 sub-groups were created during the retreat to develop the AC infrastructure and lay out proposed policies, procedures and by-laws for the following areas:

  1. Elected leaders
  2. Membership
  3. Voting
  4. Steering Committee
  5. Fiscal Accountability

Sub-Group members agreed to write up notes from their work sessions and present a draft to members at the next meeting for review, update and approval. The proposed policies, procedures and by-laws from each of the 5 areas will be combined into one single document to simplify the review and update procedure.

Notes From Proposed By Laws:

Elected Leaders:

  • Elect both a Treasurer and a Fiscal
  • Steering Committee will be made up of Chairpersons from each Work Group plus others
  • Build an Advisory Group comprised of different Community stakeholder groups

 Membership:

  • Active Members: (voting members who regularly attend meetings and actively participate in AC activities)
  • Supportive Members: (general public and stakeholders)
  • Dues: $25 for individuals, $100 for organizations

Voting:

  • Will be decided by consensus
  • Consensus requires a quorum ( which=50% of “active members”)
  • When no consensus is reached, issue will go to the Steering Committee for a vote.

Please join us at the next ACEs Connection meeting on July 27, 2016 as we embark on the next step of creating guidelines for our coalition and affirming our mission and vision.
