Indigenous tattoos tell a story about a person’s lineage, his or her journeys, accomplishments, or coming of age. Tattoos have to be earned or given, rather than based on personal desires. In this panel, L. Frank Manriquez, Sage LaPeña, and Jonny Bautista will explain the culture of indigenous tattoos, their significance in a person’s life, and the meanings behind the symbols or designs. They will also discuss the revival of interest in indigenous tattoos and how young people are choosing traditional tattoos as a means to reclaim their cultural history.
L. Frank Manriquez is a Tongva/Ajachmem artist, writer, tribal scholar, cartoonist, and indigenous language activist. Her paintings have been featured in galleries and museums nationally and internationally. L. Frank is the co-founder of Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival and serves on the Native American Council for the Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology, Berkeley.
Sage LaPeña is of mixed ancestry and a member of of the Nomtipom Wintu of Northern California. She works in the clinical setting as a certified Medical Herbalist, gives lectures and plant walks as an ethnobotanist. She is also a Culture Keeper, regalia maker, and grandmother.
Jonathan Bautista is a core member of Balik Sa Dagat: Bangka Journey. He is a Cinema and Asian American Studies student at San Francisco State University, and he wishes to spread awareness of pre-colonial traditions and practices of the Philippines.
Doors open at 6:30pm, the TALK begins at 7:00pm.
Members are free; Non-Member tickets are $10 prepaid or $15 at the door. Students with ID are $5. Preregistration ends at 5pm on the day of the program.
