What is play and why is it important for children and their families?

Why is outdoor play even more important during COVID-19?

How can programs promote the positive and measurable effects of outdoor activities for children and families?

Play and outdoor activities have positive and measurable effects on young children, such as increased educational performance and achievements, health, well-being, as well as social and personal development. Play is also a way to bring families together, strengthen relationships, build trust and bonds, and have lasting impacts on family health and well-being as a whole.

This webinar will explore how can programs promote the positive and measurable effects of outdoor activities for children and families. It will include discussion of opportunities to connect children to nature in an urbanized world, such as how to use urban outdoor spaces as a resource for inspiring a more active lifestyle and to stimulate physical literacy.

Dr. Mariana Brussoni, an internationally renowned outdoor play expert, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia, and an investigator with the British Columbia Children’s Hospital Research Institute and the BC Injury Research & Prevention Unit. Dr. Brussoni conducts research on children’s outdoor and risky play, adult attitudes related to children’s risk taking and safety, and designing supportive outdoor play environments.
