January 24, 2018 ACEs Connection Meeting: How should we proceed?

Remy Fuentes ·
At the January 24, 2018 meeting of the Sonoma County ACEs Connection, the Steering Committee organized work group sessions among members to answer our most important question: How should our group proceed moving forward? All over the room at Child Parent Institute there were large "Post-It" notes on the wall that the groups brainstormed answers to four questions about the direction of our group: (1) What do you enjoy about the General Meetings? (2) What could we use more of/doesn't serve us?

January 24, 2018 ACEs Connection Meeting: Reflections & Visions for the Future

Remy Fuentes ·
At the General Meeting for the Sonoma County ACEs Connection that took place on January 24, 2018, people came together to reflect on their experience in the coalition and to brainstorm about the future of the group. The questions included: What do you enjoy about the General Meetings? What could we use more of/what doesn't serve us? In a post-fire Sonoma County, where and how could we better serve our community? Does our name truly reflect what we are and where we are going? Who are some...

Post Traumatic Growth after Natural Disasters - Communication and Connections Help [sciencedaily.com]

Leslie Lieberman ·
A recent study from researchers at the University of Missouri found more communication among family, friends and neighbors who experienced the devastating and deadly 2011 Joplin Tornado was related to more post-traumatic growth. The 2011 tornado in Joplin, Missouri, was one of the most destructive in U.S. history -- killing 161 people, injuring 1,150 and destroying approximately one-third of the city's homes. Individuals who experience such disasters can exhibit a range of mental health...

Franciscan Partners With Online Community Platform to Address Childhood Trauma [nwitimes.com]

By Joseph S. Pete, The Times of Northwest Indiana, November 22, 2019 Childhood trauma causes long-term harm, both emotionally and physically, taking a toll on one's health. Abuse, witnessing violence or substance abuse in the home, having a parent in jail and other adverse childhood experiences or ACEs have been linked to heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, diabetes and suicide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that at least five of the top 10 leading causes...

Childhood trauma a crucial public health issue [CapitolWeekly.net]

Clare Reidy ·
Preventing childhood trauma should be one of the top goals of California policymakers, a coalition of child advocates say. About 150 of the advocates came to Sacramento last week to educate legislators about the devastating effects of adverse childhood experiences. The goal was to help legislators create policies that will better protect kids. Adverse childhood experiences, known as ACEs, are experiences that are so harmful to children’s developing brains that they affect their lives decades...

Trained: Sonoma ACE & Resiliency Fellowship Offers Science, Compassion, Community

Anndee Hochman ·
In Sonoma County, invitations to speak about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and resilience kept pouring in. There simply weren’t enough qualified trainers to go around. When Sonoma County ACEs Connection leaders applied for the MARC grant, they proposed using some of the money to develop a speakers’ bureau. Then they decided to expand that vision: Why not a nine-month fellowship for a cohort of 25 “master trainers”—two days of intensive education with Robert Anda and Laura Porter,...

Trial by Fire: MARC Sites Collaborate on Trauma-Informed Disaster Response

Clare Reidy ·
By @Anndee Hochman During a December 2017 convening in Philadelphia, several leaders from Mobilizing Action for Resilient Communities (MARC) realized they had more in common than a passion for building resilience in their communities. They all hailed from places that had recently been scorched or flooded by natural disasters: wildfires in California and the Columbia River Gorge, hurricanes in Florida, the lingering residue of 2012’s post-tropical cyclone Sandy in the Northeast.

Please see attached for the 10-24-18 meeting. Thank you @Michelle Dominguez I have a suggestion , as a way of accelerating the ACEs movement - would it be possible to have folks introduce themselves and share what brings them to the meeting - personal or professional (or both!)? Maybe they could also share what is happening in their work/world related to ACEs, trauma informed work and building resiliency? Additionally, I am wondering if folks who are participating on behalf of their...

A Call to Connection: Making Childhood Trauma Personal | Dr. Allison Jackson | TEDxRVA

Elizabeth Beaty-Smith ·
Post by Dwana Young of the NJ Resiliency Coalition: Silence gives consent. Choosing a story of silence raises our chances of mortality rates when ACEs are involved. ACE stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences. If silence is a killer then why do we do nothing? How can community help? Dr. Allison Jackson is a Trauma Informed Care Specialist. She makes a compelling case for, “connection as a cure” to counter a lot of damage done by trauma. https://youtu.be/-HG8H4n2j9I This talk was given at a...

My WHY I show up to do this work

Elizabeth Beaty-Smith ·
I recently read a quote that @Christine Cissy White (ACEsConnection) shared that says, "Trauma informed care isn't trauma informed, without the trauma survivor." No matter what degree, training, or book you acquire you can never really know how it feels to experience trauma unless you go through it. I remember when I first discovered I had an ACE score of 7; I had been serving the community by supporting resiliency, self-healing, and breaking stigmas around mental health. I came across the...

Looking forward to attending! I wonder if we might want to bring a gift that could be given to a child who is receiving family support services through Family, Youth & Children's Services ? This is a group of kiddos and families who are in need of support to stay as an intact family. When toys and gifts are donated to FY&C they are often given to the foster youth programs (which is great!) but kiddos and families who are receiving supportive services are sort of an outlier and not...
