5 Questions: Kenneth Paul Rosenberg on Why Mental Illness is 'The Greatest Social Crisis of Our Time' [inquirer.com]

By Sandy Bauers, The Philadelphia Inquirer, October 23, 2019 In 1946, Life magazine published an exposé on mental hospitals, focusing on the Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry. The title: “Bedlam 1946.” That dreadful facility, like so many others, eventually closed. A good thing? Not completely, according to Kenneth Paul Rosenberg, who maintains that people simply went from one horrific situation to another, from the grossly inadequate institutions to the dangerous streets. In neither...

Although it’s too soon to tell if integrating trauma-informed and resilience-building practices based on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) sciences is making a difference for the teens living at Home on the Range , a residential treatment center in Sentinel Butte, ND, it’s made a huge difference for the people who work there. Dozens of Kaiser Permanente pediatricians in Northern California screen three-year-olds for ACEs

Since August 2016, more than 300 three-year-olds who visited Kaiser Permanente’s pediatric clinics in Hayward and San Leandro have been screened for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as living with a family member who is an alcoholic or losing a parent to separation or divorce. Philadelphia AIDS clinic surveys youth drop-ins for ACEs

When the Youth Health Empowerment Project, a Philadelphia program for youth aged 13 to 24, did ACE surveys of those who visited their drop-in center over three weeks, it found that 81 percent had a score of 4 or more. I am glad that this topic is being explored. As a person with a very high ACE score who has had the opportunity to mitigate most of the impacts over many years, I want to assure we screen for a purpose. I do not wish to be screened every year at a well-woman visit just for the purposes of a doctor checking that a screening has been completed. The screen has to be followed up with "have you had opportunities to address these ACEs as an adult and how do you feel these experiences are currently...
