ACEs Science Champions Series: A Working Ranch Integrates ACEs and Animals into Treatment for Teens

Sylvia Paull ·
Although it’s too soon to tell if integrating trauma-informed and resilience-building practices based on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) sciences is making a difference for the teens living at Home on the Range , a residential treatment center in Sentinel Butte, ND, it’s made a huge difference for the people who work there. They now understand that kids aren’t born bad. “ACEs has enlightened us,” says Mike Gooch, clinical program director for the center, which is located on a 1,600-acre...

Dozens of Kaiser Permanente pediatricians in Northern California screen three-year-olds for ACEs

Laurie Udesky ·
Since August 2016, more than 300 three-year-olds who visited Kaiser Permanente’s pediatric clinics in Hayward and San Leandro have been screened for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as living with a family member who is an alcoholic or losing a parent to separation or divorce. But when the idea to screen toddlers and their families for ACEs was first broached at the Kaiser Permanente Hayward Medical Center, the staff were, in a word, “angsty,” says Dr. Paul Espinas, who led the...

Early prototype of the ACE Toolkit online!

Thomas Peter Berntsen ·
Hi guys, Just wanted to let you know that I got an early prototype of the ACE Toolkit (with very limited screening and reporting functionality) up on http://resixorg.github.io/ace-toolkit/ and ready for some initial feedback. It's been designed in a responsive way, which means that it should display well on smartphones, tablets, and ordinary PCs/Macs. So try and enter the address into your smartphone and see what happens. :-) It being an early prototype means that I have a lot of future...

How do these pediatricians do ACEs screening? Early adopters tell all.

Laurie Udesky ·
Last week, three pediatricians — with a combined experience of 15 years integrating ACEs science into their practices — reflected on the urgency they felt several years ago that prompted them to begin screening patients for childhood adversity and resilience when there was practically no guidance at all. Along their journey , they accumulated a list of lessons learned for other pediatricians and family clinics to use. The three pediatricians participated in the ACEs Connection webinar,...

Philadelphia AIDS clinic surveys youth drop-ins for ACEs

Sylvia Paull ·
When the Youth Health Empowerment Project, a Philadelphia program for youth aged 13 to 24, did ACE surveys of those who visited their drop-in center over three weeks, it found that 81 percent had a score of 4 or more. That’s a significant result, because, based on the  CDC-Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study , an ACE score of 4 greatly increases the risk of health and social problems, including heart disease, alcoholism, cancer, autoimmune diseases,...

Pueblo, CO, clinic rewrites the book on primary medical care by asking patients about their childhood adversity

Jane Stevens ·
In October 2015 in Pueblo, CO, the staff members of a primary care medical clinic – Southern Colorado Family Medicine at the St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center – start asking parents of newborn babies to kids five years old about the parents’ adverse childhood experiences and the resilience factors in their lives. They ask the same questions of pregnant women and their partners in the hospital’s high-risk obstetrics clinic. The results are so positive after the first year that the clinic starts...

Shasta Health Center Screening Parents for ACEs

Karen Clemmer ·
Shasta Community Health Center The trust that many families feel for their child's doctor makes the primary care setting an essential place to screen for ACEs and begin the conversation with caregivers about potential risks to their child's health and well-being. Their experience has shown that when risk is identified and assessed early on, there is a better chance of offering interventions that prevent long-term health and behavioral problems. Screening for ACEs is also an opportunity to...

Substance-abuse doc says: Stop chasing the drug! Focus on ACEs.

Jane Stevens ·
He says: Addiction shouldn’t be called “addiction”. It should be called “ritualized compulsive comfort-seeking”. He says: Ritualized compulsive comfort-seeking (what traditionalists call addiction) is a normal response to the adversity experienced in childhood, just like bleeding is a normal response to being stabbed. He says: The solution to changing the illegal or unhealthy ritualized compulsive comfort-seeking behavior of opioid addiction is to address a person’s adverse childhood...

Taking ACEs Histories for Mothers Recovering from Substance Abuse

Sylvia Paull ·
The aptly named Great Starts program at the Helen Ross McNabb Center in Knoxville, TN, provides a six-to-nine month residential treatment and two-year follow-up program for pregnant mothers and moms with newborns recovering from substance abuse. Earlier this year, curious about the early childhood history of its residents, the center started asking the women about their ACEs history. The results would not have been surprising to those familiar with ACEs: Of the 16 moms who filled out the...

Taking an ACEs History -- Who's Doing It and How?

I was amazed to learn a bit of how Vermont is responding to this matter, in response to the 2013 Legislature's House Bill 762. I did find the instruction manual that the World Health Organization (WHO) uses with their ACE International Questionaire (and the translation function, as well), to be quite comprehensive. The WHO ACE Questionaire and 'instruction manual/comments' can be found on the WHO website.

Troubled moms and dads learn how to parent with ACEs

A father in county jail is ordered to take a parenting class, but isn’t too enthusiastic about it. As part of the class, he learns about the ACE Study, and does his own ACE score. “Oh my god!” he announces to the class. “I have 7 ACEs.” His mother’s an alcoholic. His dad’s been in and out of jail. He himself started dealing drugs at age 11, and doing drugs at 14. “I’ve got two kids at home experiencing the same things I did,” he says. The light bulb goes on. A few days after a woman who’s...

Using Visual Storytelling to Inform About ACEs

Thomas Peter Berntsen ·
Hi guys, I'm a big fan of visual storytelling, as a story told well can touch both the hearts and minds of those learning about it, and telling stories visually, e.g. through movies or interactive graphics, can engage people in ways that writing cannot (and especially children and young adults, which are important demographics). I made a crude prototype of a scribe-based visual storytelling about the ACE Toolkit (that will go though a number of iterations before it's anywhere complete, but...

Re: ACEs Screening Survey

Loraine Lucinski ·
I am glad that this topic is being explored. As a person with a very high ACE score who has had the opportunity to mitigate most of the impacts over many years, I want to assure we screen for a purpose. I do not wish to be screened every year at a well-woman visit just for the purposes of a doctor checking that a screening has been completed. The screen has to be followed up with "have you had opportunities to address these ACEs as an adult and how do you feel these experiences are currently...
