2018 SALIS-AMHL Conference

SALIS’ 40th

SALIS-AMHL 3rd Annual Joint Meeting

Never Neutral: Resistance-Persistence-Insistence

2017 has been a year of many policy changes, such as the Federal Communication Commission’s elimination of net neutrality, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Session’s marijuana crackdown, the reauthorization of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) which may lead to increased government surveillance, and the whittling down of the Affordable Care Act via repeal of the individual mandate. The phrase “fake news” prevails daily. At the same time, 30 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana in some form, California has introduced its own bill to protect net neutrality, and advocacy groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation are working to strengthen consumer privacy rights.

We ask presenters to consider how our work as information professionals and/or policy makers intersects with what can only be described as an assault on facts, privacy, and access to information resources.  As a profession, we have long been associated with freedom of speech, information, and confidentiality, often in radical and creative ways.  We invite you to explore how your work, as an individual or as part of a larger organization, contributes to our professional history of resistance, particularly to those who would limit access to information or services surrounding substance use/abuse and mental health.

If you wish to discuss your abstract topic, contact any of the conference hosts: Len LevinHarvard University Medical School,Leonard_Levin@hms.harvard.edu

Julie Murphy, Prevention Research Center, jmurphy@PREV.org, Tom Colthurst, Silver Gate Group,  tcolthurst47@gmail.com, or Andrea Mitchell, SALIS, amitchell@salis.org
