Yolo County Children’s Alliance is excited to share our expanded 2016 Talk+Play=Connect Toolkit for Families for Child Abuse Prevention Month. In addition to all of the information and ideas about talking, playing, and connecting that we disseminated last year, we have included new information and tip sheets on Times to Connect. The toolkit is available in English, Spanish, and Russian, and can be found at www.yolokids.org/forfamilies/
What information is in the expanded Toolkit for Families?
This year, we expanded last year’s toolkit to include new information about Times to Connect. New tip sheets for parents of babies, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, and teenagers provide ideas about how parents can connect with their children during three routine times of the day: in the morning, during mealtimes, and at bedtime. Talking, playing, and connecting during these times can help deepen relationships and reduce conflict.
All of the original information about the importance of talking and playing and the age-specific talking tips and activities for parents to do with their children is still included in this year’s expanded version. The new Times to Connect pieces build upon these original concepts, but can also stand alone.
In addition to helping parents find positive ways to interact with their children, the information and resources in the toolkit and on our website are designed to prevent child maltreatment by supporting the following protective factors known to strengthen families: knowledge of parenting and child development, social and emotional competence of children, and nurturing and attachment.
We hope these resources help support and strengthen families as they connect with their children through talking and playing!
