A Youth Empowerment Summit — “YES!” — is planned for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Woodland Community College, 2300 E. Gibson Road in Woodland. The purpose of the summit is to empower and encourage youths to say yes to leadership roles and civic engagement in their local communities.
“YES!” is open to all ninth- through 12th-grade students in Yolo County. Participants can earn community service hours by attending, transportation assistance is available and lunch will be provided.
Youths will learn to become leaders in their community in a non-partisan environment with a focus on civic engagement and voter participation as important aspects to becoming a community leader.
They’ll also be empowered to meet and talk to their elected officials about issues that are important to the community and to young people. In addition, they’ll learn how decisions are made by the various local decision-making bodies.
The goal is to make the summit an annual event and to register 100 Yolo County youths from throughout the county for this first summit.

The summit is co-sponsored by the Yolo County Elections Office, Woodland Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board, Woodland League of Women Voters, Yolo County Office of Education, Early Academic Outreach Program at UC Davis and Woodland Community College.
