During my career in the public schools I had the rare opportunity to actually sit in the living room of a parent (s) and share my experience with their child in the school setting. Often, I would convey to them an incident that happened in the classroom.. So very often, I was asked what can I do and I suggested to them that together we might be able to solve the why of behaviors in school. Most   likely the behaviors are not just school-based though they can be..

If, and the strongest term going forward, that same school person acting as an agent for the community actually found ways to identify abuse in the home and develop counter measures.. Often, very often, the abused child is being abused by an abused parent when they were a child.  Something can be done but not alone.. The topic of sex discussions relating to child is one of those topics that people do not like to talk about .. Where is the help if any that ACE could partner with the school?  I have spoken to many officials locally and the usual pat on the head with the good boy praise and then .. go away!!

There is ample foundation money here in Chattanooga for just such an undertaking but for leadership.  I have tried so many times to be heard..

ACEs should definitely have stake in that conversation, but what i am reading sounds like it could also be a gap in parental knowledge  and child development and parental resiliency with how they were brought up.  While ACEs should be a topic of discussion, look and see if locally there is a Trainer in Strengthening Families Framework which has goals of Strengthened Families, Optimal Child Development, and Reduced Likelihood of Child Abuse and Neglect.  The Framework is more of a "whole picture" look.

And don't stop the conversation once the local officials go away, discuss how many other factors this ideology could be impacting and benefiting the whole community. For example, when families have the support and connections needed to flourish, a parent is less likely to call into work sick, thus making small changes to businesses and the local economy. Be heard! What I have found often times is at a local level, people are more reluctant to listen to someone they know so maybe it would be worth a shot to hire and bring in a facilitator or trainer.

In my experience, Strengthening Families doesn't include education about ACEs science, which can set up a parent for feeling like a failure if they're triggered by their child and don't know why.

A great toolkit to add to Strengthening Families is NEAR@Home, which bills itself as a resource for home visitors to respectfully and effectively address ACEs with families. But LOTS of people use NEAR@Home's materials to educate families, including other social service agencies, physicians, nurses, etc.

The NEAR@Home (NEAR = Neurobiology, Epigenetics, ACEs and Resilience) Toolkit provides detailed information on how to talk with families, including dialogue scripts for providers to use. The toolkit is free to download.

Definitely true depending on the trainer, its very important to get that whole picture look but in a constructive way for the family and I think since Strengthening Families is not a curriculum but a framework it is very adaptive and open to interpretation which could leave potential room for missing that qualitative approach.
