I would recommend that teachers learn about ACES so that they can be more understanding, compassionate and adopt better classroom management and education strategies. And that they refer children and families to the school counselor. Before bringing ACES to families, schools need to become trauma-informed places. Check out restorative practices, UCSF Hearts Program, and Trauma Transformed (http://traumatransformed.org/) for resources.

I agree,Monica. It is a long road to becoming a truly trauma informed school or work place, and we need to make sure staff are well informed, have adjusted their practice, and are themselves supported.

I think as educators we need to be very cautious about how we are using ACE information in schools.  Here in my district, we work hard to pair educators with mental health professionals to make sure that we are sharing clear information about roles and boundaries with our school staff, and making sure educators know how to refer to appropriate services. We share with our mental health partners what we can do within the realm of teaching and learning environments to incorporate effective trauma informed practice that provides safe learning environments  for students who may have ACE scores that impact their success at school, but is also beneficial for ALL students.

Hi, Monica, Paul, and Teresa:
Concurring with all of you, transforming the culture of education (and all cross-sectors) is a very intentional, thoughtful, engaged process. Shifting all systems, including the belief system, takes time, courage, and grace.
