I'm working with a group of inter-disciplinary professionals to address trauma in our child welfare and court systems. We have a question about strategies for establishing expertise in trauma for child welfare cases.

Does anyone have:

  • A threshold or guidelines they have used with judges to establish expertise in testimony from opinion witnesses?
  • Preferred certifications or trainings for opinion witnesses?
  • Any other experience or advice with this?

Thank you in advance for any ideas or strategies you can share.

The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) is a professional organization that has put out guidelines on best practices for interviewing children and runs trainings on forensic interviewing of children.  That is one resource. Any expert witness should be aware of what is admissible and not admissible as evidence.
