I am part of a child wellness group at Cincinnati Children's Hospital hoping to implement ACE screening in a few departments within the hospital to see if parental ACE score has any impact on child health outcomes. In our preliminary discussions, we have come across several questions I'd like to pose to this group to get feedback on:

-What are people's perceptions/reactions to these questions? For those of you already administering this, do you provide any insight or introduction to the screening measure before giving it to people? (if so, what do you provide)

-For those administering the ACE screening, have you ever had someone "triggered" by answering these questions and want an appropriate outlet for discussion (social services, psychologist, etc.)?

-Is anyone looking at parental ACE score and the impact on child health?

Thank you in advance for any feedback you can provide - much appreciated!

Liz: Quen Zorah might be a good resource for you -- she helped integrated screening in the family services unit of the Port Townsend, WA, public health dept. She's a member of ACEs Connection.

Also, Teri Petersen, a pediatrician in Portland, OR, and several members of her practice began screening parents of 4-month-olds last year. It's been so successful that the entire practice is planning on how to integrate screening for all client age groups. She's not a member of ACEsConnection, so let me know if you'd like to talk with her. Next month, I'll be doing a story about how pediatricians are integrating ACEs screening.

Chris Blodgett at Washington State University Area Health Education Center is doing research in Head Start families and screening for ACEs in parents.
