Hello Folks,  I am designing a curriculum for para professionals to teach self soothing and self regulation skills to deal with trauma.  I need a pre and post test.  Does anyone have a recommendation?  I am starting with a pilot project in a middle school, a high school, an alternative sentencing program and a domestic violence shelter.  Thank you so much for your help.   Carolyn

HI

I am interested in your model.  We have one called START (Screening Tool for Assessment and Relief of Trauma)  We use a simple assessment followed by targeted self soothing and other psychoed.  the assessment and interventions are typically presented by a non-clinical person.  We are using community organizations and other sites to provide this tool.  I would be interested in hearing more about your work.

Hello Nicky,  That is exactly what I am doing.  I am putting those psych ed skills into a formal curriculum so that it can be used anywhere by anyone who is a good teacher.  I just want to make sure it works.  Currently I am using a Beck Depression Inventory and Burns Anxiety test.  I am not sure I am measuring what I want to determine its success.  We need models that are evidence based.  Help!!  Carolyn

For the age group you are focusing on you might want to look at Crops and
Props. A child trauma survey and a parent trauma survey regarding the
behaviors of the child. We are using a screening tool developed using
focus group input on the boys and men of color we serve. We are currently
using the tool with high schoolers and transition age youth. It includes
the standard four question PTSD screen with a couple of additional
questions but a test like this would not be age appropriate for under
12’s. Crops and Props are better suited although they are a little
longer. Are you sure Beck’s is age appropriate for the population? I am
not sure exactly what age you are working with. Our model involves a 25
minute meeting that includes screening psychoeducation, and introduction of
self-soothing tools and self-care planning. Our 30 day and 60 day follow
ups are looking really good. If you think your site might be a good place
to be part of our pilot let me know.

Carolyn,  I don't know if it fits or not but we use the validated Children's HOPE Scale and the we use the Adult HOPE Scale now.  The Children's HOPE Scale is six statements and six possible answers.  The Adult HOPE Scale is 8 questions.  You can always add additional questions about stress and mindfulness but we like measuring hope in trauma exposed children and adults.  Casey Gwinn, President, Alliance for HOPE International Originally Posted by Carolyn Curtis:

Thank you Casey, Carolyn and all.

As soon as I posted my first reply, I realized that this is exactly what we are looking for in TRE - evidence-based research (although the anecdotal research is very rich already from all over the world), and my understanding of research is zero. I am therefore grateful to have been caught in this thread, and am looking for suitable examples of Pre&Post Tests, as given here.

Thank you all and best wishes.

Raymond Lambert
