I have never been clear about what we are looking for in the ACE question about separation/divorce.  Is it the absence of a parent that makes this question significant (in which case, would losing a parent through death or a parent leaving before the child's birth be similar), or is it the potential conflict around the separation/divorce (in which case, would you score that if the parents were never together)?

Perfect--thanks!  I knew there was no judgment intended.  I have occasionally seen websites that refer to that particular ACE as "absence of parent, for example through divorce or separation."  That wording seems to imply that the important factor is the absence of the parent, which could also could occur through parental death.  But what you suggest, that the question was a proxy for relational stress, clarifies the intent for me.  Thanks so much:-).
