Hi there,

My name is Becca and I am a public policy graduate student. I've been interning with Rural Opportunity Institute in Edgecombe County, NC this summer, mainly researching trauma-informed policing. My time with ROI is coming to a close and I have developed a report with recommendations for Edgecombe County based on national examples.

ACESConnection blog posts and resources have been very helpful as I put together this work! I am eager for feedback from folks far and wide so I thought I would ask the community here if anyone would like to comment on it.

In particular, does anyone know of any other examples or case studies of communities and programs that are really moving the needle by using trauma-informed practices in the law enforcement setting and getting impact on equity, health/well-being outcomes, etc?

I am very grateful for any time you might spend commenting on this document! Please also feel free to email me directly at becca.lane@duke.edu

Best,
Becca Lane

Hello Ms Lane,

Thank you for highlighting this topic!  Did you contact anyone at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) or the Yale Child Study Center?  Or Charlotte-Mecklenburg?  Below is a link to the toolkit we collaboratively developed for police when responding to children exposed to violence and childhood trauma.  New Haven CT and Charlotte- Mecklenburg NC have a significant history in the area of Trauma Informed Policing, which started in the 90’s with the Child Development-Community Policing program. I’d be happy to discuss it with you further if you’d like to contact me.

Excellent work Becca!!  I underscore what Sarah said about the toolkit that’s available on the ICAP website as this material is amazing and one source I refer to in training I developed. Since I’m no longer at Johnson City PD I’m wondering how you gathered information about practices there?  I’ve revised my training that is POST certified in TN to include reducing community trauma by police developing cultural compentencies to address equity.   Thanks so much for your work on this. So much to be done in the justice field moving forward but thankful to see ACEs gaining traction there too. 😃
