Hi Liz, It is awful and heartbreaking - as a parent, I cannot even imagine the anguish children and families are currently experiencing and how these traumatic separations will impact children, families and communities for years to come.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is taking action - although no action is fast enough - here is a bit of that info:

Numerous AAP chapters were among 540 national and state organizations that sent a letter to Department of Health Services renewing the demand to end the separation of families immediately.  Since January over 300 other state and national groups added their support to the call to action.

In March 2017 they wrote Detention of Immigrant Children which says, in part: "From the moment children are in the custody of the United States, they deserve health care that meets guideline-based standards, treatment that mitigates harm or traumatization, and services that support their health and well-being. This policy statement also provides specific recommendations regarding post-release services once a child is released into communities across the country, including a coordinated system that facilitates access to a medical home and consistent access to education, child care, interpretation services, and legal services."

While this does not stop my heart from breaking, knowing how widely the call to stop these traumatic family separations is among health care and others does provide some relief.  We must maintain and escalate the pressure to change these horrific policies.
Thank you,
Karen
