Greetings, i am thrilled to join this community! I was placed in foster care a few hours after I was born. My early experience of foster care and then adoption let to a life long passion for building cultures of belonging in diverse communities addressing complex social problems. Recently I was asked to give a talk about the nuggets i have learned from this 20+ of work as well as insights from my personal struggles. The talk was recently released and I would love any feedback on how the message could help serve and support your work. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOiObEt3TPk&t=4s

Many thanks for your time, i really look forward to connecting and hearing your thoughts.

Kind regards,

Jessie

This is beautiful, and beautifully told, and shared. I love how your story led you to a focus on belonging! Your passion and compassion and self-compassion all come through.

I love how you share wider stories of displacement, for communities as well as individuals and your lens on the crisis of belonging rather than say depression or symptoms. I love how you do this while still addressing system disparities and how people are displaced. That's complex stuff.

The answers to the questions about what erodes a sense of belonging is something I'll not forget.

I suggest sharing this as a video (under post) as well as a blog post (also under post). Those are ways at least more in this community can find your talk.
And I hope they will. You have so much to share.

Cissy

Thanks Cissy, i really appreciate taking the time to listen to it and give such a thoughtful response. In all my belonging work, it is the first time I reveal the driving force behind it in my personal experience. It has taken radical courage but when i get responses like yours there is a deeper layer of healing that happens each time. Thanks for your advice. I am not sure what the difference between a "blog post" and "post" but will navigate around to see what i find. For the blog post, do you suggest just a short paragraph or do people in this community like to read a little more? Many many thanks, Jessie

Jessie:
Your emotion and passion came through in your words. I've never thought of it as a crisis of belonging and I love that lens. Good on you for being courageous, and many know it comes with risks and rewards because there's still a lot of bias against those who have been in the foster care system, or who have lots of ACEs and speak of those things. I think things are changing though and it's healing, as well, to hear others talking more about it as "us" stuff rather than us/them ideas.

As for posting, you can via the post button, "post a blog post" longer with some details (if you want) or post an ask-the-community (as you did perfectly). You can post a video resource, and your TedTalk is that. It's just people look and access different things on the site and since you are looking for ways to reach/connect with others I think sharing in all those ways can be helpful. Also, poke around the communities and see what you find. Please keep posting and asking questions.

I loved your Talk!  SO important to talk about our sense of belonging and what we are wanting in our lives & communities as you so eloquently state.  I shared it with friends and colleagues. Thank you and so glad you are part of our ACEs Connection community!

Best, gail

Thank you, i did it : ) I'll get the hang of it! btw, somehow when i started to articulate the state of the world as a crisis in belonging it was very empowering because that is something each and everyone of can do something about. would love to know if in a few months that lens shifts anything. Thanks or your kind support getting me through technology!
